Educational Program Coordinator

 

About Entomica 

Entomica Insectarium is an insect-based science centre and natural history museum located inside the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Entomica displays a variety of live exotic insects, reptiles, amphibians and fish from around the world in beautiful living vivariums. Entomica has developed engaging education programs to teach the community about science and nature using its unique inventory of animals from all over the world for inspiration and teaching.  

 

Job Summary

The Educational Program Coordinator is primarily responsible for developing and delivering educational content to varying audiences in a variety of settings. The Educational Programming Coordinator must be capable of designing curriculum-based content that considers the needs of the audience. This role manages all aspects of educational and outreach bookings, including customer service, booking, delivery and invoicing. In addition, the Educational Program Coordinator is part of the animal-care team and is expected to care for animals as per established policies and regulations; duties may include feeding, cleaning, testing and more. As an Entomica team member, the Educational Program Coordinator will assume other duties and roles as required, including, but not limited to, grant writing, research and assisting with events and outreach. 
 

This is a one-year contract subject to funding approval. You must meet all requirements to be eligible.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate education programs at our facility in Sault Ste. Marie and locations within and outside the community (travel and weekend work required). 

  • Provide public tours and program delivery to tourists, students (classes from primary to college and university level) and special community groups at our facility. 

  • Design and prepare travelling insect exhibits.   

  • Develop educational programming/presentations and/or update existing programming and presentations, considering curriculum requirements and Entomica’s objectives. 

  • Work with, train and direct volunteers and students.  

  • Learn and assist with insect husbandry and insect handling/demonstration. 

  • Effectively and professionally communicate with clients and stakeholders- email, phone, etc. 

  • Create and maintain programming schedules. 

  • Make bookings and facilitate Invoicing/payments related to programming. 

  • Comply with all policies and procedures, including CFIA regulations. 

  • Develop social media-Facebook posting, webpage content, Instagram and job-related emails. 

  • Support fundraising event delivery, outreach and grant project research, as necessary. 

  • Report to SSM Insectarium Director of Operations and the Board of Directors. 

  • Daily cleaning, feeding and housekeeping duties. 

  • Other duties, as assigned. 

 

Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required:

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in an environmental, scientific or educational-related program. 

  • Minimum 2 years customer service and/or education experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills. 

  • Experience working or volunteering in a learning environment, an asset. 

  • Experience delivering presentations to groups in an in-person or virtual setting. 

  • Demonstrated ability to and/or experience preparing interactive and educational presentations.

  • Demonstrated competency using computers, the Microsoft Office Suite and social media. 

  • Ability to work independently and as a team. 

  • Self-starter with good attention to detail and a passion for excellence.

  • Motivation to learn about insects, their biology and ecology. 

  • Demonstrated comfort handling live insects and a variety of other animals.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. 

  • Willingness to travel outside of the city, as required, with advance notice. 

 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Current Vulnerable Sectors background check. 

  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle access for travel. 

  • Meets all requirements under the “Eligible Candidate” definition.

 

“Eligible Candidate” means an individual who:

  • is either a new entrant into the workforce, is transitioning to a new career, or is unemployed or underemployed and is entering a new field,

  • has not previously participated in NOHFC’s People & Talent Program,

  • is at least 18 years of age,

  • resides in Northern Ontario, and

  • is legally entitled to work in Canada.

 

Wage:

  • $20/hour

  • Full-time position with 35 hours per week

Event and Fundraising Coordinator

Job Summary

The Event and Fundraising Coordinator is primarily responsible for developing, planning, marketing and delivering new opportunities for Entomica to generate revenues, which include but are not limited to, events, lotteries and grants. The role is demanding, creative and dynamic, requiring strong interpersonal skills with superior written language capabilities, as well as excellent attention to detail. In addition, the Event & Fundraising Coordinator is part of the animal-care team and is expected to care for animals as per established policies and regulations; duties may include feeding, cleaning, testing and more. As an Entomica team member, the Event & Fundraising Coordinator will assume other duties and roles as required, including, but not limited to, educational delivery, presentation development, event booking and invoicing. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop plans for fundraising events and initiatives, including workshops, socials, Adopt-a-Bug program, lotteries, etc. 

  • Produce and/or coordinate Marketing materials and social media posts to support communication of fundraising initiatives, including general public awareness. 

  • Set goals and request corporate sponsorship of programs. 

  • Deliver fundraising events, monitor outcomes and customer feedback, and produce reports on results.  

  • Deliver community outreach at select festivals and events throughout the year to improve awareness of Entomica and its offerings. 

  • Research and identify grants (governmental and foundations) to align with Entomica’s objectives and projects, and write and submit applications.  

  • Work with, train and direct volunteers and students.  

  • Learn and assist with insect husbandry and insect handling/demonstration.
