JOB DESCRIPTION


The Sault Ste. Marie Insectarium, also known as Entomica, is looking for a Science and Technology Museum Tour Guide to assist us with our insect exhibit at our fantastic new location at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre. The Science and Technology Museum Tour Guide’s key duties are to assist with insect care, public tours and outreach events.

DETAILED JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Insect husbandry/Insect care
2.    Assist with Entomica staff with public tours and outreach events (virtual and in-person)
3.    Assist with Science North Travelling Road Show outreach events
 

Public Tours and Outreach
●    Prepare all equipment, supplies and vivariums for public tours, outreach and travelling
●    Conduct public presentations with live exotic insects
●    Assist with games, crafts, and other activities 
●    Responsible for overall welfare of insects and public health and safety during outreach events
●    Report and insect losses to SSMI President
●    Create incident reports for injuries and report to SSMI President 

Insect Colony- Laboratory and Exhibit Maintenance:
●    Perform regular maintenance on insect colonies and the laboratory, including:

  • cleaning cages

  • replacing food plants, food stocks, and water as necessary

  •  collecting eggs/larvae for colony propagation and fractionation

  • document insect rearing observations (exceptional, abnormal or debilitating)

  • maintaining a very clean and well-organized space 

  • assure insect care checklists are completed properly

  •  maintain public exhibit space

  • maintain health of vivariums 

  • return all vivariums to required configuration 

  • clean vivarium glass 

  • ensure tables are dusted, floors swept and mopped as needed in SSMI space

  • prior to tours or public days ensure insects are placed in appropriate display cases and appropriate signage is in place – rotate insects as necessary

  • after tours ensure that all insects are returned to the secure laboratory

  • assure opening-closing checklists are completed properly

 

Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required

  • Interest in our natural environment

  • Motivation to learn about insects, their biology and ecology

  • Comfortable with handling live insects

  • Comfortable with doing presentations to small groups in an in-person or virtual setting

  • Comfortable with video streaming technology

  • Interest in or experience with social media

  • Excellent personal interaction skills

  • Excellent verbal communication skills

  • Willingness to travel to Northern Ontario communities for outreach events

  • Willingness to work weekends

  • Applicants must have a current police background check
