The Sault Ste. Marie Insectarium (Entomica) is looking for three Outreach Education Assistants for its Virtual Learning Science Program

The Sault Ste. Marie Insectarium, also known as Entomica, has moved into a new location at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre and is developing a pilot program that engages all ages in science and learning about the environment, the natural world and miracles of nature, using its inventory of exotic insects from all over the world for inspiration and virtual on-line learning. 

The Outreach Education Assistants will work with Entomica staff to:

  1. Develop strategies and products to advertise Entomica’s new on-line virtual-leaning educational program from our location to classrooms, senior centres and the community, using social media (FB, YouTube videos, etc.) and other promotion tools.

  2. Assist with insect care in the laboratory.

  3. Conduct public tours of our insect exhibits for visitors of all ages (when Covid-19 pandemic closures are over).

  4. Assist with delivering our Virtual Learning Science Program- and social media platforms (Facebook, twitter and webpage updates).


Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required

  • Minimum of a High School diploma desired  

  • Interest in or experienced with social media

  • Interest in our natural environment 

  • Motivated to learn about insects, their biology and ecology

  • Comfortable with handling live insects

  • Comfortable with doing presentations to small groups

  • Excellent personal interaction skills

  • Excellent verbal communication skills

  • Computer experience with Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel


Working Condition/Eligibility Requirements

  • Full time position for up to 52 weeks 

  • Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development Ontario Job Creation Partnership (OJCP) Eligibility requirements: Applicants must meet the OJCP guidelines which are: be unemployed, live in Ontario, be legally authorized to work in Canada, and meet at least one of the following criteria (have an active EI claim, have an EI benefit that ended within the past 5 years, or have paid employee premiums in at least 5 of the previous 10 years – where earnings have been at least $2000 in each of those years) 

  • Applicants must have a current police background check

  • Applicants must have valid driver’s license
