Job Description
Entomica Insectarium is an insect-based science centre and natural history museum located inside the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Entomica displays a variety of live exotic insects, reptiles, amphibians and fish from around the world in beautiful living vivariums. Entomica has developed engaging education programs to teach the community about science and nature using its unique inventory of animals from all over the world for inspiration and teaching.
Tasks and Responsibilities:

Facilitate education programs at our facility in Sault Ste. Marie and locations within and outside the community (travel and weekend work required).

Provide public tours and program delivery (education) to tourists, students (classes from primary to college and university level) and special community groups at our facility.

Design and prepare travelling insect exhibits.

Work with and train volunteers and students.

Learn and assist with insect husbandry and insect handling/demonstration.

Effectively communicate with clients and stakeholders- email, phone, etc.

Create and maintain programming schedules.

Invoicing/payments related to programming.

Ensure CFIA regulations for facility compliance, permit applications, animal transfers, volunteer training, professional correspondence, exhibit design, afterschool, and weekend programs.

Develop social media-Facebook posting, webpage content, Instagram and job-related emails.

Report to SSM Insectarium Program Manager and Board of Directors.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required

A post-secondary degree or diploma in an environmental or educational related program.

Excellent personal interaction skills.

Excellent verbal communication skills.
-
Ability to work independently (self-motivated) and as a team.

Comfortable with doing presentations to groups in an in-person or virtual setting.

Interest in or experience with social media.

Motivation to learn about insects, their biology and ecology.

Comfortable with handling live insects.

Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Willingness to travel outside of the city as required with advance notice.
Eligibility Requirements

This position is funded by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC). Applicants must meet the NOHFC qualifying criteria to be eligible for the position:

Are new entrants into the work force, are transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field.

Have not previously participated in a NOHFC-funded internship.

Are at least 18 years of age.

Reside in northern Ontario, and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
